Statement regarding LAFCO’s decision to dissolve Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District

El Centro, CA (October 24, 2024) – The creation of the Imperial Valley Healthcare District (IVHD) under AB918 prioritizes expediency over developing a sustainable and equitable healthcare system.

The actions by the IVHD and LAFCO today will irreparably change the healthcare landscape of our county all without a single vote of our citizens and without critical financial safeguards in place.

There are several thousand residents in the north end of the County that signed a petition opposing the dissolution, contradicting AB918’s author’s claims of widespread support. In fact, AB918 is under legal scrutiny because it undermines community self-determination, voting rights, and property rights of PMHD’s constituents. That is the antithesis of advocating for a more inclusive process to create a fair and sustainable healthcare system.

We will continue our call for appropriate sunlight and scrutiny on this issue to ensure actions by the IVHD are in the best interest of our county as a whole.
